Carl Linnaeus
Carl Linnaeus was a Swedish scientist, who was a botanist, physician, and zoologist. Born May 23rd 1707 in the countryside of Småland, in southern Sweden he studied in Uppsala University. Later, in 1730 he began to give lectures there. Throughout the years of 1735 to 1738 he lived abroad where he published Systema Naturae in Holland, on his return to Sweden he went back to his old university and became a professor of botany.
Carl Linnaeus is known as the father of taxonomy because:
1. Linnaeus classified organisms according to similarities in structure - logical today, but unusual then.
2. He began giving living things two-part scientific names based on Latin. The term for this is binomial nomenclature. The first name is the genus; the second is the species.
3. He started the seven levels of classification: kingdom, phylum, class, order, family, genus and species. He also named countless species.
Linnaeus had a plan to travel to travel Lapland. He hoped to find new plants, animals and hopefully valuable minerals. He was also very curious of the customs of the native Sami people who occupied Scandinavia's vast tundra’s. He began his expedition on 22 May; he travelled on foot and horse and it took him 11 days to reach his first destination, UmeÃ¥. He sometimes stop along the way; dismounting on to examine a flower or rock. He was particularly interested in mosses and lichens, the latter a main part of the diet of the reindeer which is a common animal in Lapland. Carl returned to Sweden on 28th June 1738 and went to Falun where he entered into an engagement to Sara Elisabeth Moræa. Three months later he moved to Stockholm to find employment as a physician so he can support a family.
1716 Attends Latin school in nearby cathedral city of Växjö.
1727 George II ascends to the throne.
1727 Begins medical studies at the University of Lund.
1728 Transfers to University of Uppsala, where he attracts the interest of Olof Celsius, a theology professor who was interested in the plants of Sweden.
1730 Appointed Lecturer in Botany at the University of Uppsala.
1732 Travels to Lapland on a grant from the university.
1735 Becomes engaged to Sara Moraea.
1735 Publishes first edition of Systema naturae.
1736 Travels from the Netherlands to England where he meets Sir Hans Sloane, President of the Royal Society and Philip Miller.
1738 Linnaeus establishes a medical practice in Stockholm. Publishes Classes plantarum.
1739 Marries Sara Moraea. Appointed physician to the Admiralty and also first President of the newly-established Swedish Royal Academy of Sciences.
1741 Linnaeus becomes Professor of Practical Medicine at Uppsala University. First son, Carl, born in January.
1745 Publishes Flora Suecica.
1746 Publishes Fauna Suecica.
1747 Appointed court physician.
1749 Writes the thesis Specimen academicum de oeconomia that identifies ecology as a distinct area of investigation.
1750 Start of the Industrial Revolution.
1751 Publishes Philosophia botanica.
1753 Publishes Species planturum, the starting point of modern botanical nomenclature.
1761 Linnaeus is ennobled.
1762 Linnaeus adopts the title Carl von Linné.
1774 Linnaeus suffers a stroke that forces him to retire from teaching.
1776 Linnaeus suffers a further stroke.

Ecosystems
Ecosystems
An ecosystem is an environment consisting of all the organisms living in a certain area, as well as all the non-living, physical components of that particular environment. Ecosystems can be either natural or artificial.
One example of a natural ecosystem is a rainforest. Where as an artificial ecosystem for example would be a garden. These two different places can have similarities in the form of plants and/or animals. However they also have many differences such as climate.
Both these places will contain a huge variety of insects; some the same and some completely different. The same will go for plants; there will be many that are the same but they will also contain different ones. The reason these are different is because some plants and animals can only survive under certain circumstances. The temperature will be different as a rainforest is usually hot even with the downpours. A garden will tend to be hot in the summer and cold in the winter.
In the rainforest there are a vast range of animals such as: orang-utan, gorilla, boa, caiman, red-eyed tree frog, birdwing, leafcutter and, toucan and quetzal. In the garden you will find a different type of frog, butterfly, snakes and birds. These animals may not be the same; but they are from the same family.
It is quite difficult for humans to explore the rainforest as it is a vast area and it is full of dangerous animals. However; it would be quite easy to explore a garden depending on its size as there will be a smaller amount of different animals and plants.
Some of the animals would find it hard to live in the other ecosystem. The leopard would struggle to live in the garden as it would not have any medium/large animals to eat; unless someone lets there dog out. The hedgehog would in turn find it hard to survive in the rainforest as there are many animals that would be able to easily kill it.
Rainforests only occupy around 3-6% of the Earth’s surface; but a staggering 50% of animals live there. With this vast amount of animals in a relatively small area it would be very difficult to know if you have discovered every living thing there. In the garden it is still hard to know if you have discovered everything as animals can be anywhere.

Communicating in the IT industry
This unit is about communication skills which are needed by people who work in the IT industry. Some of these skills are specific to the IT industry, such as the use of specialist methods of communication, for example there use of video conferencing. But other skills such as being able to give clear verbal explanations are relevant to working in any industry. Communicate is the central to almost every aspect of business and privet life, so being able to communicate clearly and effectively, by speaking, writing and other methods, is a very useful skill.
It also looks at the impact on social life. Over the last 40 years IT has changed the way we do many things. It has brought many advantages such as keeping in touch, using email and mobile phones. Not all changes are good, there are also negative effects. IT has provided new ways for criminals to break the law.
MSN
For: Easy to communicate with multiple friends and family.
Against: If you add/accept someone you do not know or someone is pretending to be someone else. It can be dangerous if you are not careful.
Facebook
For: Another easy way to talk to friends and family, but you can also arrange meetings, birthdays and post photos and videos.
Against: If you have not sorted your security settings correctly, anyone could be allowed access to your profile and view your page. This would give them information on where you live and what you look like.
Texting
For: Quick and easy to text your friends and family. They also have access to the internet.
Against: The cost can be pretty high unless you get a good contract.
Email
For: Send large files to your work or collage. Also can be sent to your friends.
Against: If someone figures out your password they can then send email from your to other people that you wouldn’t want to be sent.
In the IT industry, communication can have special challenges because of the technical nature of the sector. IT is also widely used at home and in business by non-technical people, who can find the use of terminology very confusing. As professionals you need to learn to communicate as effectively as possible with the It users your work with and support.
One to one. This is probably easiest because you can see the person and judge whether they are following what you say. If you are explaining something or doing something, you can usually show the person as well as tell them
.
In person with an audience. When you are giving a presentation or training session to a group of people, you have to consider the needs of many people may be following you. For example some people may be following you but others may not understand you.

Digital Divide
With more and more new technology being created and sold many people spend less time outside or socialising face to face. People use sites like Facebook and msn to communicate with people but don’t actually go out to see them because they no longer need to. In our free time most do a variety of things but almost everything involves technology such as: watching the telly, checking emails and playing games on pc or a consol. For example if you had some friends who were on their Xboxes you could just go on yours and speak to them without going out.
Technology affects communities as many shops and businesses are now online only and this can make it harder for people to find jobs. However this can make it easier for elderly people as they do not need to risk a painful journey.
Most jobs now require you to have good knowledge on working a computer. If an elderly person was to attempt to get a job they would find it difficult as computers weren’t around when they were younger; therefore they may not know how to work them. It is also very hard for an elderly person to learn how to use computers.
All these different pieces of tech require an energy source which can cost a lot. With technology becoming a bigger part of our everyday lives they need to be constantly supplied with energy. Unfortunately this energy is hard to come by and it is expensive to get. This means you will have to pay more and the energy becomes harder to get.
Copyright is a law that gives you the ownership over what you create. Whether you write a book or paint a picture it is yours and no one else has any rights over it unless you allow them. Plagiarism is when you take somebody’s work without giving them the credit for it. For example copying and pasting from the internet without changing anything is plagiarism as it is not your work but you are using it. This is a form of cheating as is not allowed in educational buildings or at work.
On computers you can access your bank by using your details. Unfortunately you can get emails from people pretending to be the bank trying to steal your information. If you write on a blog or social networking site then everyone can see it. There was a case of a girl who moaned about her job being boring online and she got fired for it. Another case is when a man posted on Twitter that if his plane didn’t hurry up he would blow up the airport for a joke and he got fined one thousand pounds (£1000).
WiMAX is a new internet source which means you will no longer need to search for hotspots. WiMAX is also going to be free to use. Broadband speeds vary depending on where you live. Urban areas have fast and therefore better internet connections compared to those in rural areas.
When we throw out our old computers there is a chance they will end up in a 3rd world country where they will dismantle the computer themselves. When they do this they need to burn parts of the computer which lets of a toxic gas that can cause long term damage to person.

How to stay safe online
There are many different ways to stay safe online. Staying safe is very important and should not be taken lightly. People who haven’t paid attention to their online safety have been subject to theft and bullying.
If you make an account on a social networking site you should make sure that your profile is hidden to everyone other than friends and family. You can make sure of this by changing it in the settings. If other people can see your account they will be able to talk to you, see any details about you that you have written and see all your pictures. This can be dangerous because if a paedophile can view your profile they could find out what you look like and find where you live. Also you could be subjected to bullying from people you do not no. This has happened before and some people who are bullied over the internet have killed themselves which could have been avoided by simply changing their settings. In this link we see that a teenage girl was the subject of cyber bullying and this may be part of the reason she took her own life.
On any sight where you need to make an account you will need to enter a password. When choosing your password make sure it is something you will always remember. Also make sure that it is not easy to guess because if it’s a simple password somebody could easily access your account. This is a story about a man who had his password guessed by his wife and although it isn’t very serious it shows that passwords can be easily guessed. If it was someone else who had hacked his account things could have been much worse.
Make sure you install an anti-virus programme. These will tell you if you have any viruses on your computer and what type they are. They also will allow you to run scans and remove any malicious software. If you do not have a type of anti-virus on your computer you may well have problems if you get a virus. Some of these programmes will prevent pop ups and even tell you if a link could be dangerous or not. Unfortunately some viruses such as the Trojan horse can remove all anti-virus programmes from your computer and proceed to steal your information.
Firewalls are great to stop other people connecting to your internet. By setting one of these up only selected networks can use the internet and access your computer. These networks are ones that you choose and edit in the settings. If for example you want online gaming you may need to change the settings to allow connection. Firewalls can prevent you from going on certain websites and they also help to stop you being hacked.
Viruses can do a range of different things to your computer. The Trojan virus (named after the Trojan horse) is a vicious virus that will do many things to your computer. There are many different versions of this virus and they can do the same or different things. This virus can access your computer allowing the creator to use for themselves. Another type can stop you accessing the internet on your own computer. The Trojan can also clear your system operator and steal your personal information. Identity theft can be the result of a Trojan. The Trojan can and will remove anti-virus programmes allowing other viruses in. There are many other types of viruses which can do the same thing as the Trojan or do something else.
Malware will access a computer undetected and it can contain things such as Trojans, worms and other unwanted things. This can mean, yet again that your personal information is not safe. Malware will also cause pop ups to appear on your computer. This link is about a hospital that got attacked by malware. It took two weeks’ worth of effort to restore most computers.
Phishing is another way people will try and get your details. It is usually done through instant messaging and email. People will use this and try and direct you to a fake website which is made to look as real as possible; there they can take details such as bank codes. This is about a woman who fell for a fake website and gave over her details. Fortunately she cancelled her accounts over the phone in time before anything was stolen.
Spam is sending the same message many times to try and force you to read it. Spam can be sent via email but most sites have a junk box so they will not bother you so much. However by sending them in instant messages you will receive them and a firewall cannot stop them.
Always make a backup for everything you save on your computer whether its photos or important work as these things can easily be lost. You could save your documents several times on the hard drive but they can all be wiped by hackers. You should have a copy of everything on a memory stick as well as the hard drive.
Encryption is needed if you have wireless internet. Without it anybody can access and use your internet free of charge. Somebody with a wireless device such as a phone can find your routers signal and use it. If you have encryption they will need to know the code to use your internet.
Top tips
1) Only accept emails from people you no and go on trusted sites.
2) Always read fine prints on anything you sign up to on the internet. Also, make sure it’s a real website you are signing up to.
3) Use a good antivirus program, spyware remover and firewall.
4) Beware of fake emails claiming to be from eBay, PayPal or your bank.
5) Monitor the websites your children go on, get them to write down the websites they use.
6) Do not use obvious passwords and change it occasionally.
7) Do not give out any personal information such as bank details, passwords or phone numbers to anybody.
8) If you decide to meet someone you found online go to a public place or/and go with a friend.
